What to Wear for Engagement Photos

5 Wardrobe Tips for Amazing Engagement Photos

The inevitable question after booking an engagement photoshoot, "Umm, so what do we wear?"

It can feel like a daunting task to pick the perfect outfit for your engagement photo shoot, but with these 5 practical tips, you will find that task to be much easier.

ONE

Consider the Location

Most likely you will know WHERE you want to take your engagement photos before you know what you want to wear, so let the location inspire your outfits. It wouldn't really make sense to wear 5-inch stilettos at the beach and you probably wouldn't wear a bathing suit in the middle of downtown Houston, so think about where you will be taking photos first. Next, think about how you will interact with your environment. Some locations, like the beach, offer a lot of opportunity for interaction, i.e. splashing in the waves and dare I suggest actual swimming! ;) So at the beach, it may be a good idea to consider bringing a bathing suit or an extra outfit that you don't mind getting wet.

Here are a few more examples:

  • Urban settings, like downtown Corpus Christi, would be a great location for getting a little more dolled up and looking extra fancy. Think Sex In The City glam!

  • Local parks are wonderful for more casual outfits like jeans and t-shirts.

  • If you are adventurous and want to hike to the top of Enchanted Rock for your session, it might be a good idea to wear boots for the hike and then change into your actual outfit once at the top.

TWO

Say NO to Match-y Match-y outfits

In general, it is best to aim for outfits that coordinate rather than outfits that match exactly. Gone are the days of everyone wearing white shirts and jeans for photo sessions! There are a few ways to approach curating outfits that look really good together:

1. Complimentary colors

2. Different shades of the same color

3. If one wears a pattern make sure the other wears solid

THREE

Plan Ahead

Okay, so I know this may seem a little obvious, but don't wait until the night before your engagement session to pick out your outfits. Try on your outfit beforehand. Take your outfit for a test run. Make sure it fits correctly and that you like how your outfit feels after an extended period of time. Take a few selfies in your outfits to make sure you like how you look! For women, make sure that you have the right undergarments for what you are wearing! There is nothing worse than unwanted panty lines or an obnoxious bra strap that just won't stay hidden. If you are ordering clothes online, make sure to allow for time to exchange items.

Four

Consider the Season (Weather)

*Scoffs slightly as I dream of a magical place with actual seasons*

As any south Texan will know, we a hot season, a hot HOT season, a hot and wet season, and a hot one day/cold one day season. Even though our seasons aren't as variant as other places, it is worthwhile to consider what season your photos will be taken in.

FIVE

Be Yourself

Let YOUR personality shine. This may be obvious, but don't wear clothes that you don't like. I'm going to say this again, DO NOT WEAR SOMETHING YOU DON'T LIKE. It doesn't matter if Grandma thinks you should wear a cocktail dress. If you hate wearing dresses, you shouldn't wear a dress for your engagement session. It doesn't matter if Pam from down the streets says you shouldn't wear your ripped jeans. If you are ripped jeans and band t-shirt kind of person, we are here for it!

BONUS 1. A fun way to add some personality and fun is to add accessories, think hats, scarves, picnic blankets, sparklers! Anything you think will add some fun and that bit of extra pizazz will make your photos all that more special!

2. Add variety to your session by bringing an outfit change! Two different outfits are an amazing way to add variety to the look of your final gallery. Lots of couples will choose to bring one formal outfit and one more casual outfit.

Jaclyn & Mike wanted an urban feel so we took them to downtown Corpus Christi and added some flair with sparklers!

Cassidy & Drew wanted more of an old-time romantic feel so we headed to Goliad Texas for a dreamy engagement session.

Edye & Trey's engagement was at the Botanical Gardens in Corpus Christi so they opted for earthy toned wardrobe. We also loved the Edye brought along a couple of different flower crowns to wear as accessories!

Adventuring into the countryside, Levi & Sadie styled themselves in rustic ware that gave authenticity to the session.

Karlee and Austin brought two outfits for their morning beach session. Their first outfit was a little more casual with jeans and their second outfit brought the WOW factor with Karlee's elegant flowing dress.

Thank you so much for checking out this blog! Remember, if you are ever unsure about what outfits to wear to your engagement session, we always happy to help our couples plan and style our sessions!
